Rock Climbing Activities For Beginners

Rock climbing is a low-impact exercise that will strengthen your muscles and improve your coordination and flexibility. If you would like to enjoy views from an elevated height, explore some rock climbing activities that are geared toward novices.

An Outdoor Climbing Session

Indoor and outdoor climbing walls are recreational features that are designed to train new climbers and improve the skills that more experienced climbers possess. Since you may want to ultimately climb a mountain or a rock formation, seek a venue that features an outdoor climbing wall.

A wall will contain a series of footholds that will be constructed of rocks or manufactured materials. The footholds will jut out from the wall's surface and will be wide enough for you to anchor the tips or sides of your shoes and your hands. Prior to beginning a climbing session, you may be shown a series of popular movements.

Unlike rope climbing, which relies predominantly upon upper body strength, rock climbing utilizes core strength and upper and lower body strength. While completing some exercises that may mimic the movement of a bear or a lizard, you will learn the proper way to approach a wall and escalate slowly and accurately up it. Your instructor may require you to wear a safety harness and to coat your hands in chalk, prior to climbing. These two items will prevent you from slipping from the wall.

If you want to further practice while at home, purchase a gear set that contains climbing holds and ratchet straps. Climbing gear that is designed to hold the weight of an adult can be secured to a tree or another natural, elevated featured that is on your property.

Guided Tours

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that utilizes artificial or natural rock formations. With this type of activity, small heights are implemented, and safety harnesses and ropes may not be required. A large ledge or a platform may extend from the bottom of a climbing area or may extend from climbing sections that are adjacent to one another. This type of activity can be completed with the aid of a guide.

There are also guided climbing tours, which may include visiting a national park or another natural feature and using a series of ropes to aid with climbing up a rock wall. With a guided tour, you may receive personalized instructions from your teacher, and this person will spot you during each active climbing session.
